Four minutes later, Shettleston suffered a blow when Martin went down after tackling MacLeod and he had to be replaced by S.Jack.

The Glasgow side forged an opening in 10 minutes when a fine pass from J.Jack was brilliantly taken by A.Jack, but he slipped at the vital moment as he lined up a shot.

Cameron had a great chance to open the scoring five minutes later when he rose well at the back post to connect with a corner kick from Buick, but nodded inches wide.

Then Miller created another opportunity for Cameron when he sent over a cross from the right and his header was inches over the bar.

Shettleston were not far away from the opener in 25 minutes when Coyne neatly laid the ball off to A.Jack, who picked out Thomson with a fine cross, but he headed straight at Geddes from eight yards.

Carnoustie broke to the other end through Miller, who used some trickery to get away from Williamson, but his parting cross was headed away for a corner.

There was a scare for the Gowfers on the half-hour mark when J.Dickson flighted in a cross which Galbraith headed out of the hands of Geddes and just over the top.

Then Miller pounced on a mistake in the middle of the park and fired a low ball into the box which Mitchell managed to divert away for a corner kick, with Cameron waiting to pounce.

Carnoustie's pressure was rewarded with the opening goal in 36 minutes. Cameron raced towards goal and played the ball to Miller on the edge of the box. He held it up well for SCOTT KOPEL, who burst through the centre of the Shettleston defence and coolly slotted past Hutchison from 10 yards.

Five minutes later, Shettleston had a chance to level matters when a J.Dickson cross into the box found Williamson, but Malone was well positioned to divert his effort to safety.

In 43 minutes, Kopel cleared the ball off the line after Thomson had got up well to head a J.Dickson corner kick at goal.

Moments later, Buick had an opportunity to double the lead when Morrison was fouled 25 yards from goal and he fired in the free kick which Hutchison collected at the second attempt.

Cameron held possession well a minute from the break and found Buick, who had space for a shot, but lashed it well over the bar.

Then Geddes had to be alert to save at the feet of A.Jack after he had burst into the penalty area.

Only the woodwork denied Shettleston an equaliser in 55 minutes when a cross from the left was headed on by Coyne to A.Jack, whose effort came back off the right-hand post before being cleared.

Two minutes later, Buick was booked for bringing down McGhie.

A second booking followed in 61 minutes when Shettleston's A.Jack was cautioned for a foul on Buick.

There was a hairy moment for the Gowfers in 65 minutes when a corner from A.Jack beat everyone and came off the junction of bar and post.

After being under the cosh for a spell, the Westfield side grabbed a second in 68 minutes. Galbraith gathered possession in his own half and raced upfield, evading several challenges on the way. When the ball broke loose, it broke to IAN MACLEOD, who took one touch and lashed a superb 20-yard shot past Hutchison into the corner of the net.

Immediately after the goal, Williamson was stretchered off after falling awkwardly and he was replaced by McKenna.

Carnoustie had appeals for a penalty kick in 72 minutes when Bonnella went through on goal and he appeared to be hauled back by Crooks, but the referee waved play on.

Then, with 15 minutes to go, Ogilvie was yellow carded for throwing the ball away. Soon after, Shettleston made another change with D.Dickson coming on for McGhie.

Another substitution followed in 78 minutes when Malone was replaced by Devine for Carnoustie.

Four minutes later, a long ball upfield from Ogilvie released MacLeod, whose shot was well held by Hutchison.

Three minutes from time, Wilkie took over from Bonnella. Cameron had an opportunity to make it three for the Gowfers in the 89th minute when a corner kick was headed into the air by Ogilvie and he came in with a volley which went into the side-netting.

Morrison was replaced by McIlvennie before a magnificent save by Hutchison denied Carnoustie a third in injury time. A corner from Devine found Galbraith 10 yards from goal and his powerful header looked netbound until the 'keeper leaped to palm it over the crossbar.
