Carnoustie Panmure Versus St Andrews

Four Goal Gowfers Show Saints The Way In Scottish

Carnoustie Panmure 4 St Andrews 1

St Andrews had wind advantage in the first half and were first to show with a McPherson 35-yard free kick which was wide of Geddes' left-hand post.

At the other end,, Buick tried a drive from outside the box, but Adair managed to block the ball away.

After a fairly even opening spell, Carnoustie began to take the upper hand. Bonnella had a chance to open the scoring when he was put through by Devine and drove in on the right-hand side of the box, but his shot was blocked for a corner, which came to nothing.

Buick fed a great ball through to Cameron, but 'keeper Clark came out to block at the striker's feet. The loose ball broke to Bonnella, who managed to turn and get a shot in, but Clark had recovered and was back, in position to make the save.

In a rare St Andrews attack, McReadie had a shot at goal from 30 yards, but it was straight at Geddes, who saved easily.

Devine got down the right for Carnoustie and fired over a good cross to the far post where it was met by Bonnella, but his header was well past the post.

A few minutes later, Bonnella came close with a shot from the edge of the box, but was just wide of Clark's right-hand post with the 'keeper scrambling across his goal-line.

Geddes had to look smart to get down to a Herkes shot from 25 yards, but held it well at the bottom of his right-hand post. Shortly afterwards, a cross from the left by McReadie was just too strong for Douglas and he failed to get a touch.

Good play between Cameron and Bonnella set up Buick for a shot from just outside the box, but his effort failed to trouble 'keeper Clark, going wide of his right-hand post.

The first caution of the game came in 35 minutes when Kopel was booked for dissent.

Five minutes later, Carnoustie's pressure was finally rewarded. Devine slipped the ball through to CAMERON, who shot across Clark and into the far corner of the net to put the Gowfers ahead.

St Andrews tried to respond and with the wind at his back Herkes attempted to beat Geddes from 30 yards, but his effort was far too high and over the bar.

Just on half-time, Carnoustie made it two. Bonnella got up the right and appeared to be fouled by the 'keeper, but the referee allowed play to continue and MACLEOD fired the ball home with the aid of a slight deflection.

St Andrews resumed for the second half with Cusick on in place of McPherson, who had taken a knock before the interval. Unfortunately, Cusick was only on the park a short time when he appeared to go down injured. It emerged, however, he had lost a contact lens, which was duly found but he had to leave the field to have it cleaned and replaced.

While Cusick was off the park Carnoustie increased their lead. A long throw ball from Malone released BONNELLA, who rounded 'keeper Clark before firing the ball into the empty net.

The Gowfers were now firmly in control and pressed forward at every opportunity. They seemed to have a strong penalty claim when Bonnella was brought down in the box, but the referee ignored the shouts and waved play on.

In 57 minutes, St Andrews made a double substitution with Caithness and Broadfoot being replaced with Jeffrey and Grant. Carnoustie also made a change at this point, sending on Gray for Devine.

Cusick having returned to the field was then booked in 62 minutes for dissent.

Cameron should then have put Carnoustie further ahead when he was right through, but Clark came out bravely to save at his feet. Buick then created an opening for Bonnella, who again appeared to be impeded inside the box, but once more no penalty was given.

In 67 minutes, Jeffrey was yellow-carded for a foul on Cameron.

Two minutes later, it was Carnoustie's turn to make a double substitution, Wilkie and Miller taking over from Morrison and Buick.

In 73 minutes, Gray fired over a cross from the left and after controlling the ball, WILKIE, rifled home the Gowfers' fourth into Clark's left-hand corner.

Clark pulled off a great save from a Bonnella header to deny Carnoustie a fifth, while at the other end a superb one-handed save from Geddes prevented Jeffrey opening the visitors' account.

In 86 minutes, St Andrews 'keeper Clark was booked for dissent.

Right on the final whistle, Herkes almost grabbed a late consolation goal for the Fifers with a fierce 25-yard drive, but Geddes got down well to save at his left-hand post. In so doing, the Gowfers 'keeper secured his seventh consecutive shut-out.
