Satisfying Win Against Old Rivals Tayport

Carnoustie Panmure 4 Tayport 3

Carnoustie got the game under way and were first to show when a through ball from Cumming was headed on by Voigt, but went straight through to keeper Fitzpatrick.

Voigt was then fouled by Morris 30 yards out, but Conway's free kick was headed clear by Livie.

The Gowfers bright start was rewarded with the opening goal in five minutes. A long kick-out by Whyte carried over the heads over the 'Port defence and was headed over the advancing Fitzpatrick by the inrushing Russell. The ball struck the inside of the post and rolled along the line, but RUSSELL was following up and knocked it into the empty net.

In 10 minutes, McDowell was booked for dissent.

Carnoustie continued to press and squandered a chance to go two up when a Conway cutback from the right was ballooned high over the bar by Smith.

There was a scare for the Gowfers in 16 minutes when Kenneth drove into the home box and went down under a challenge from Craig, but the referee was right on the spot and waved aside the visitors loud penalty claims.

Tayport were now coming more into the game and forced a corner on the right. McDowell's cross, however, was headed well wide by Morris.

In 20 minutes, Morris fouled Conway on the left and earned himself 'Port's second yellow card of the match in the process.

Urquhart attempted to head clear from Conway's free kick, but the ball dropped out to Abbot, who drove high over the top from the edge of the box.

Tayport were forced to make a substitution in 22 minutes after an accidental clash between Collier and Wemyss in midfield. Collier was able to resume after treatment, but Wemyss had to go off and was replaced by Webster.

In the Fifers next attack, an almighty goalmouth scramble ensued and no fewer than fice attempts at goal were blocked by the Gowfers defence before the ball eventually broke to McDowell, who balsted it high over the bar from 15 yards, thus easing the pressure on the home goal.

Shortly afterwards, a deep cross by Morris again posed problems for the Carnoustie defence, but the ball was clutched safely by Whyte off the head of Kenneth.

In 41 minutes, Tayport's third booking of the match saw McNaughton cautioned for a foul on Conway.

Two minutes later, Kerrigan appeared to twist a knee and was substituted by Hall, who went to right-back. This prompted re-shuffling of the Gowfers defence with Cumming taking over at centre-half and Smith switching to left-back.

Just on half time, Smith fouled Rennie on the left. Rennie took the free kick himself, but Whyte was equal to the task and held the ball easily.

Looking to get back on level terms, Tayport started the second half strongly and had an early chance when McDowell pounced on a loose ball 25 yards out, but shot weakly past.

It was not all one-way traffic, however and a quick Carnoustie counter-attack saw Conway cut in from the left and unleash a fierce drive from the edge of the box. The shot appeared to have Fitzpatrick beaten, but was just too high and shaved the top of the crossbar.

Encouraged by that near miss, the Gowfers pushed forward and increased their lead in 55 minutes, Collier collected a long clearance out of the home defence and laid the ball back to VOIGT, who beat Fitzpatrick with a fierce shot into the far corner of the net from 15 yards.

Carnoustie appeared to be coasting at this point, but were caught napping in 63 minutes. Whyte attempted to punch clear from a Rennie cross, but was impeded by several of his own players. The ball went only as far as MCNAUGHTON, who fired into the empty net from six yards.

A minute later, Tayport were back on level terms. This time, McDowell caught the Gowfers defence square with a through pass to KENNETH, who lobbed the advancing Whyte for the equaliser.

In 67 minutes, Russell went off and was replaced by Steele.

Just two minutes later, however Carnoustie fell behind for the first time in the match. Another long through ball again caught the defence square and this time it was WEBSTER who went through unchallenged to fire past Whyte to put the visitors ahead.

In 70 minutes, Carnoustie were forced to make third change, Brand taking over from Morrison, who had been injured in a midfield clash.

McDowell then required treatment after tangling with Abbot, who was booked for dissent.

The Gowfers pressure was rewarded in 83 minutes after a foul on Brand 35 yards out. CONWAY curled the free kick over the defensive wall and past Fitzpatrick into the right-hand corner of the net to level the score at 3-3.

With their tails up once more, Carnoustie then went in search of a winner and two minutes into stoppage time a Hall shot was blocked away by the 'Port defence, but fell to BRAND, who thundered a terrific 35 yard volley high into the roof of the net to give the Gowfers all three points.
