Carnoustie Panmure Versus Beith

Junior Scottish Cup 2nd Round

Carnoustie Panmure 2 Beith 1

West Super League Premier Division leaders Beith Juniors provided the opposition for Carnoustie Panmure in a Citylink Scottish Junior Cup second round tie at Laing Park on Saturday afternoon.

Among those on from the start was new signing Gerry Farrell, most recently with Shettleston Juniors, but also with considerable senior experience under his belt.

After 13 minutes, the Gowfers took the lead when a Muhsin cross from the right to the far side was picked up by CUMMING, who beat Fulton along the line, then from the narrowest of angles fired low past Tiropolous at the near post for his first competitive goal of the season.

Beith immediately tried to hit back and were unlucky not to level the score when a McLean shot from the right found only the side netting.

Shortly afterwards, McLean again put the Carnoustie defence under pressure with a fine solo run up the line, but his low cross was cut out and cleared by Bollan.

Play was becoming slightly more physical and after 35 minutes J. Jack was yellow-carded after pulling back Voigt, who was attempting to go down the line.

With the first half drawing to a close, Beith went in search of an equaliser and a Canning shot from inside the box flashed across the face of the home goal and just wide of McCafferty's right-hand post.

Reid then saw a good low drive well held by McCafferty, and moments later a McLean 25 yard effort was only just off target.

Right on the half-time whistle, J. Craig made a fine solo run up the visitors' left, but put his cross into the side-netting, allowing the Gowfers to go in one goal up at the interval.

Half Time : Carnoustie Panmure 1 Beith 0

Carnoustie began to push forward and won a corner. Muhsin crossed the ball low and hard to the edge of the box from where CUMMING drove low into the net with Tiropolous unsighted in the crowded goalmouth, putting the Gowfers two up after 51 minutes.

Moments later, Reid slipped a pass through to J. Craig, whose shot was blocked for a corner. Craig took the flag kick himself, but his cross was headed clear by his Gowfers' namesake.

After being on the receiving end for a spell, Carnoustie pushed forward once more and a Cook long-range effort from 35 yards was just too high.

A foul by S. Jack on Cook gave the Gowfers a free kick 35 yards out. D. Craig flighted the ball over the defensive wall, but his effort was just too high and also cleared the crossbar.

Just after this, Bollan cracked heads with Reid and had to leave the field for attention to a cut, resuming a couple of minutes later having had a bandage applied.

In 81 minutes, Beith's pressure paid off when a Spence 35 yard free kick from the right to the far post was nodded back across the face of the goal by Canning and found the unmarked REID, who headed home from close-in to give the visitors a lifeline.

In the dying minutes S. Jack received a second yellow card, quickly followed by the red, and Beith were down to 10 men for the remaining few minutes.

Shortly afterwards, the referee blew for full-time and Carnoustie had a famous victory and a place in the third round draw.
