Penalty Save And Two Own Goals See Gowfers Crash At Bonnyrigg
Bonnyrigg Rose 2 Carnoustie Panmure 1
Carnoustie set the ball rolling, playing down the slight slope on a very heavy pitch and with a near gale-force wind at their backs. Hall sent the ball deep into the Rose box for Voigt to chase, but Parkin got to it first and booted it away upfield.
In three minutes, Bonnyrigg won a corner when a Paliczka cross was deflected behind by Ogilvie. McCaul's cross was met by Elliot, who put the ball behind for what should have been a goal kick, but the stand-side referee's assistant brought howls of protest from the Gowfers' bench and support alike when he indicated a corner. Again McCaul took the kick, but this time Cook was fouled by Elliot and the pressure on the visitors' defence was eased.
Carnoustie came close to opening the scoring in eight minutes when a Smith long-range effort from 40 yards flashed just wide of Cantley's right-hand post.
The Gowfers then found themselves under pressure in 14 minutes after Smith was adjudged to have fouled Killin 30 yards out. However, Elliot smashed the free kick against the defensive wall and the ball spun harmlessly away.
Abbot picked up the loose ball, but was then fouled by Reid. Taking the free kick himself, the Gowfers' skipper dropped the ball deep into the Bonnyrigg box, but Meikle got up to head clear.
Rose won another free kick 30 yards out when Cook brought down Riley. Elliot again took the kick, but this time sent the ball narrowly over the top and the chance was lost.
In 26 minutes, Abbot took a pass from S. Robertson and fired in a shot, but the ball hit Meikle, taking the pace off it and also deflecting it right into Cantley's hands.
From the 'keeper's kick-out, the ball reached McCaul, but his shot from the edge of the box was straight at Whyte, who had no trouble making the save.
Next minute, Bonnyrigg again came close when M. Robertson played the ball low and hard across the face of the goal, but with no-one up in support it flashed right across and was cleared away by S. Robertson. As the ball dropped over the halfway line, it was collected by Smith, who was then chopped down by Parkin, who became the first player to be shown the yellow card.
Beith took the resultant free kick, sending it deep into the home box. As the ball came into the middle of a crowd of players, the referee ran forward pointing to the spot, indicating that S. Robertson had been pushed in the back. Voigt's spot kick, however, was a poor one straight at the 'keeper, who was able to beat the ball away.
Encouraged by Cantley's fine save, Rose pushed forward through McCaul and Elliot, but the latter's low drive was well-saved by Whyte.
In 39 minutes, an Elliot free kick was knocked behind by Beith for a corner. McCaul's flag kick appeared to go right across and wide of the far post without anyone else getting a touch, yet the referee's assistant indicated another corner, much to the anger of the Gowfers' support for the second time in the match.
Half Time : Bonnyrigg Rose 0 Carnoustie Panmure 0
Within seconds of the restart, Bonnyrigg conceded a free kick right on the halfway line when the ball was handled by Killin. Abbot played the ball deep into the Rose box, but Morrice got up to head clear. There was a let-off for Carnoustie in 50 minutes when Paliczka knocked the ball past Whyte from an Elliot cross, but the referee's assistant had his flagged raised and the "goal" was chalked off for offside.
In 55 minutes, Rose won a free kick when Voigt brought down Elliot. Before the kick could be taken, Smith was shown the yellow card for 'adopting an aggressive attitude' after a minor incident with McCaul.
Parkin took the free kick, but sent the ball out behind without anyone else getting a touch.
The deadlock was eventually broken in 59 minutes when the ball was played into the Rose box and following a bit of a scramble, it fell to COOKE, who thumped it home, putting Carnoustie ahead.
From the centre, the ball was played through to M. Robertson, who took it down the right. Beith got across to put in a tackle, which the referee adjudged to have been too robust and showed him the yellow card.
In 68 minutes, Bonnyrigg made their first change with Brigain replacing Reid.
Next minute, Abbot won the ball off Paliczka, but was then fouled by the same player. Ogilvie sent Beith away on a good run up the left before crossing to Abbot, who was then fouled by M. Robertson. Abbot took the second free kick himself and sent the ball across the face of the Rose goal, but with S. Robertson just failing to get the vital touch, it curled out behind for a goal kick.
Bonnyrigg made a second change in 77 minutes, replacing Killin with Walker.
Next minute, the Gowfers had a slight scare when Whyte, in trying to clear the ball, cannoned it off the inrushing Morrice and it passed him heading for the goal, but he was able to scramble back and claim it before it crossed the line.
However, disaster struck in 83 minutes when NAREY had the misfortune to chest a McCaul cross past Whyte into his own net to level the score.
Two minutes later, a through ball from Muhsin gave Abbot a chance to put the Gowfers back in front, but he rather snatched at his shot and sent it wide of Cantley's left-hand post.
As if the loss of one own goal was not enough, incredibly worse was to follow in 89 minutes. Brigain chased a long ball down the right and sent in a low cross, but as OGILVIE slid in trying to clear it away, the ball struck his boot and went past Whyte into the net.
As the watch clicked over into stoppage time, Carnoustie made a change with Collier going on in place of Hall.
Three minutes into time added on, Paliczka tried to send in a cross, but the ball struck Beith on the hand. The referee then showed the Gowfers' defender a second yellow card for deliberate hand ball and off he went, reducing the visitors to 10 men. Abbot was then booked for protesting about the decision.
Just a minute later, the referee blew for full-time, bringing to an end a thoroughly miserable afternoon for the Laing Park men.
