Russell Double Sends Gowfers Crashing Out Of Redwood Leisure Cup
Broughty Athletic 2 Carnoustie Panmure 0
Carnoustie set the ball rolling and had a good half-chance in two minutes when Voigt controlled a through ball from Muhsin, then turned and fired in a shot from about 25 yards, but Cargill got up well to parry it away, with Bertie completing the clearance.Play then surged to the other end where R. Kenny tried a shot. Bollan's attempt to head clear fell to McLeod, who shot well wide.
Two minutes later, it was the Gowfers who again came close. Collier made a good run up the left before sending in a low cross to Voigt, who drilled in a shot, but Cargill got down to make a fine save at the base of his right-hand post.
In eight minutes, Voigt was fouled by Cormack almost on the halfway line. Hendry's free kick picked out Collier, who headed the ball down. Muhsin then fired in a shot, which took a deflection off a defender and went out behind, but the referee raised howls of protest from the travelling support when he awarded a goal kick to the homesters.
As the Gowfers continued to press, Narey sent in a good cross to Muhsin, whose shot was just too high and went narrowly over the top.
In 12 minutes, Abbot made a great run up the left before crossing to the far post where Cook tapped the ball goalwards behind Cargill, but at the last second the 'keeper turned and scooped it off the line, denying the Gowfers what looked an almost certain opener.
Broughty then pushed forward in response and a McGinlay cross picked out R. Kenny, who powered in a header, but McCafferty got down well to touch the ball round his left-hand post for a corner. Russell dropped the flag kick right into the goalmouth where several Fed players tried to stab the ball home, but each time it was blocked before D. Farrell knocked it just wide.
In 23 minutes, Carnoustie won a corner when a Cook fierce drive was blocked behind by McLeod. Muhsin's cross, however, was headed clear by Bertie.
D. Farrell was first to the loose ball and immediately set off on a run up the home left. He then crossed to R. Kenny, who squandered a good opportunity by heading high over the top.
Again the Gowfers pushed forward with Donnachie and Cook combining well to set up a chance for Muhsin, who drilled in a shot, but Cargill got up to palm the ball away and Pylon completed the clearance.
In 28 minutes, the referee again raised howls of protest from the Carnoustie support after Collier ran on to a Muhsin through ball and then appeared to be pushed to the ground by Bertie. The official, however, saw nothing wrong and waved play on.
R. Kenny picked up the loose ball and went on a fine solo run before trying a shot from 30 yards, which McCafferty touched over the top at the expense of a fruitless corner.
Next minute, Cormack was shown the yellow card for a foul on Collier.
In 34 minutes, McLeod made a run down the line and sent in a deep cross, which McCafferty touched over the top. O'Leary took the resultant corner, but wasted it by dragging the ball across and out behind without anyone getting a touch.
Five minutes later, Carnoustie again came close to opening their account after a Cook throw-in was only partially cleared. Muhsin volleyed the ball back in only to see Cargill get up to touch it over the top.
With the half-time whistle only a couple of minutes away, the referee again brought protests from the Gowfers' followers after a Donnachie low drive was clearly deflected behind off McLeod, but the official awarded a goal kick instead of a corner.
Half Time : Broughty Athletic 0 Carnoustie Panmure 0
The second half began very much as the first had ended with Carnoustie again doing most of the pressing. In 50 minutes, the Gowfers squandered another great chance to take the lead when a Robertson cross found Voigt only eight yards out, but before the striker could get the ball out from under his feet, Cargill got down to claim it.Next minute, Abbot took a pass from Muhsin and fired off a shot from just outside the box, but Cargill got across to make a fine save.
There was further controversy in 53 minutes when Bollan clashed with D. Farrell and was shown the yellow card after being adjudged to have fouled the Broughty man. From the resultant free kick, Bertie picked out Russell, who shot well wide.
A minute later, Carnoustie had a scare when McCafferty came outside his box to intercept a long through ball. As he couldn't handle the ball, the 'keeper chose to head it away. It then dropped to D. Farrell, who tried a shot, but McCafferty, scrambling back, made a great save diving to his left and turned the ball round the post.
Russell took the resultant corner, but when the ball came over, Narey got up well to head clear. In 57 minutes, the Gowfers were again unlucky not to go ahead after Abbot sent a deep cross right into the home goalmouth. Cargill initially claimed the ball, but then dropped it. Proudfoot's attempt to knock the ball clear fell to Abbot, who fired it back in, but his shot was just off target, whizzing narrowly over the top.
At this point, Carnoustie made a change with Narey being replaced by Cumming. As a result of the switch, Cook went to left back to make way for the substitute.
Next minute, R. Kenny was cautioned for bringing down Donnachie. Bollan sent the resultant free kick right into the Fed box, but Bertie cleared it away before Collier could get the necessary touch.
R. Kenny then made good progress up the Broughty left before swinging over a cross to D. Farrell, who shot well wide. In 64 minutes, the Gowfers again had a chance to open the scoring when a Cumming cross was head-flicked on by Voigt to Abbot, who tried to chip the advancing Cargill, but the 'keeper was just able to get up and fingertip the ball away and McLeod completed the clearance.
Broughty then mounted a promising counter-attack on the left, but this petered out when D. Farrell's low cross looking for R. Kenny was intercepted by McCafferty, who came rushing out to claim the ball before the Fed man could get on the end of it.
In 69 minutes, Cook and Voigt combined well for the Gowfers before the latter sent in a good cross to Abbot, who tried to find Collier at the back post, but Cargill got up well to take it cleanly.
Next minute, Cook linked with Donnachie who sent a long ball forward to Collier, but he was pulled up for the first offside decision of the match.
In 75 minutes, the referee brought more shouts of protest from the Carnoustie support and bench alike when Collier appeared to be chopped to the ground inside the home box in what seemed a stonewall penalty claim, but the official saw nothing wrong and waved play on.
As the ball was then played deep into the Panmure half, Hendry moved to collect it and was fouled by Bertie, but amazingly the referee gave the free kick to the home side, upsetting the Gowfers' fans yet again.
With 10 minutes to go, Carnoustie were made to pay for all their missed chances when Robertson clashed with R. Kenny inside the visitors' box and the referee ran forward pointing to the spot. Robertson was booked for pushing the Broughty player and, when he voiced his opinion to the referee, was shown a second yellow card and he was off.
After the Carnoustie full-back had left the field, RUSSELL took the disputed spot kick and thumped the ball into the net, sending McCafferty the wrong way.
Before play restarted, Broughty made a double change, P. Kenny and Murdoch replacing R. Kenny and McGinlay.
In 84 minutes, the Gowfers were dealt a further blow when an O'Leary cross struck Cook on the heel and after spinning high in the air, the ball dropped to the unmarked RUSSELL. Although McCafferty got a hand to the shot, he couldn't prevent the ball crossing the line and the Fed were two up.
Right on the final whistle, McLeod sent Russell away up the right, but he appeared to run the ball out of play under pressure from Abbot. Amazingly, the referee awarded a corner kick to the home side and Abbot was shown the yellow card for protesting at the decision.
Russell's flag kick was headed clear by Donnachie and as the Gowfers surged forward Voigt sent in a cross to Abbot, who shot narrowly past Cargill's left-hand post.
As the 'keeper cleared the ball away upfield, the referee brought the tie to a close and the Gowfers had slumped to their first defeat by a Broughty side since August 30 1995.
