Carnoustie Panmure Versus Kirriemuir Thistle

Gowfers' Dismal League Cup

Carnoustie Panmure 1 Kirriemuir Thistle 2

A shock 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Kirrie Thistle at Laing Park last night saw Carnoustie Panmure finish bottom of North Division League Cup Section 2 with only two points from their three games.

The result was all more disappointing as Forfar West End's 2-0 defeat from Arbroath Vics meant any victory at all would have been good enough to take the Gowfers through to the semi-finals.

Kirrie kicked off, but it was Carnoustie who were first to show, Voigt blasting wildly over from a Conway lay-off.

The Gowfers early pressure was rewarded in five minutes, when Cumming beat Allan on the left and crossed inside to COLLIER, who controlled the ball well before turning and firing low into the kepper's bottom left-hand corner for the opening goal.

Kirrie had a good chance to draw level from a Millar lay-off, but Kettles shot high over the top from the edge of the box.

In the visitors next attack, a Scrimgeour 30 yard drive was touched over by McCafferty for a corner. Craig's headed clearance from the flag kick was driven back in by S.Farquharson, but McCafferty brought off a fine save.

Thistle continued to press and equalised in 18 minutes after S.Farquharson was fouled by Abbot 30 yards out. SCRIMGEOUR's powerfully struck free kick cleared the defensive wall and with the aid of a slight deflection found the top left-hand corner of the net via the underside of the crossbar, giving McCafferty no chance.

Carnoustie battled back and came close to regaining the lead when a Cumming cross set up Hendry, who blasted wide when he should have done better.

Back at the other end Scrimgeour almost netted a second for Kirrie when his 30 yard drive flashed narrowly past McCafferty's left-hand upright.

Thistle continued to threaten at every opportunity and in 37 minutes were gifted the lead after Craig hesitated while attempting to clear and was dispossessed 35 yards out. Faced with a clear route to goal, SCOTT ran into the box and lashed the ball past McCafferty from 15 yards, giving the keeper no chance.

Just on half-time, a Cook cross from the left almost produced an equaliser, but Collier's header lacked direction and failed to trouble Reid in the Kirrie goal.

Half Time : Carnoustie Panmure 1 Kirriemuir Thistle 2

Carnoustie resumed with Bollan on for Cook, who had taken a knock late in the first half. Kirrie also made a change at the interval, Dick replacing Kinmond.

As in the opening period, the Gowfers dominated the early play after the break.

In one promising home attack, Cumming set up Hendry for a volley. but Reid made a fine save, turning the ball past for a corner. Carnoustie then forced a second flag kick in quick succession, and this time Abbot's cross was dropped by Reid, but the ball was scrambled clear by the Kirrie defence before nay of the Gowfers' players could take advantage.

Thistle began to come more into the game once more and a fine drive by S.Farquharson was touched over by McCafferty for a corner. Millar's cross, however, was headed clear by Voigt, back helping his defence.

As the Gowfers continued to press for an equaliser, Reid did well to turn a great shot by Conway past for a corner. Conway's flag kick was headed down by Voigt to Hendry, who got his direction all wrong, ballooning his shot high over the bar.

Moments later, Collier was given a free header from a Cumming cross, but put the ball past.

In 69 minutes, Abbot was replaced by Steele.

Two minutes later, Voigt saw yellow after a foul on Smith.

Both sides made a further substitution in 74 minutes, Orr replacing Allan for Kirrie, and Hall taking over from Collier for Carnoustie.

Hall was quickly in the thick of the action, sending in a great cross from which Steele headed narrowly past.

Hendry was next to squander an opportunity when he was high and wide with an effort after a Conway shot rebounded from the crowded goalmouth.

In 81 minutes, Kirrie made their third and final change with Scott being replaced by Berry.

With time running out, Carnoustie were now desperately searching for at least an equliser and Reid was forced to bring off another great save after Cumming got his head to a Craig cross.

In the dying seconds, Cumming again came close when he was allowed a free header from a Hall cross, but put the ball wide.

That proved to be the last action of the match as shortly afterwards the final whistle triggered jubilant celebrations from Thistle while the Gowfers were left pondering what might have been.
