Rose kicked-off playing down the slight slope with a strong westerly wind at their backs, but it was Carnoustie who had the first attempt at goal in two minutes. Farrell played the ball forward to Voigt, whose shot took a deflection, but McGlynn was able to make the save.In a quick home counter-attack, the 'keeper's long kick-out was picked up by Carrigan, who fired just wide of McCafferty's left-hand post.
Carnoustie had a half-chance when Bollan played a long ball forward for Voigt to chase, but McGlynn came smartly off his line to take it before the striker could get the necessary touch.
Back at the other end,the Gowfers had a slight scare when Bollan's attempt to head clear from a Herd cross fell to Carrigan, who tried a shot, but ballooned the ball high over the top and right out of the park.

In 23 minutes, Carnoustie won a free kick when a Farrell forward pass struck Donnelly on the hand. Craig took the kick, but put the ball straight to McGlynn. Rose continued to do most of the pressing and should have taken the lead when Herd beat Bollan and squared the ball to Carrigan 12 yards out. Hendry, however, put in a great tackle and knocked the ball behind for a corner. Carrigan's flag kick found Tyrrell, who shot high over the top from the edge of the box.
In 37 minutes, a rare Gowfers' attack saw a Steele cross into the home box fumbled by McGlynn, but the 'keeper recovered to claim the ball at the second attempt, under pressure from Voigt.
Hendry then made a great run through the middle before releasing Steele on the left. The winger's low cross, however, was too near McGlynn, who took it easily. Carnoustie were enjoying their best spell of the first half and in 41 minutes came close to opening the scoring. Farrell fed a good pass through to Muhsin, whose shot was just off target, skimming narrowly over the bar.
From McGlynn's goal kick, Herd burst forward, but McCafferty came rushing out to save bravely at the Rose player's feet. The ball spun free and Hendry knocked it out behind for a corner. A second flag kick then followed in quick succession before Narey managed to clear the ball upfield to ease the pressure on the Gowfers' goal.

Carrigan again took the flag kick and this time picked out Denham, who sent his header over the bar.
In 57 minutes, Rose had another good chance to break the deadlock. Bradley linked with Herd, then cut inside and fired the ball across McCafferty's body, but missed the target with his shot going narrowly past the left-hand upright. Despite having wind advantage, Carnoustie were seldom seen as an attacking force, but a rare visitors' attack saw Voigt attempt a long-range shot, hoping to catch McGlynn unawares, but the 'keeper took it easily.
In 62 minutes, Linlithgow made their first change, McDermott being replaced by Feeney.
Next minute, good play by Denham and Carrigan allowed Bradley to try a snap shot from the edge of the box, but McCafferty got down well to make a fine save. Still unable to open their account, Rose rang the changes again in 66 minutes, this time with a double substitution, Tyrrell and McArthur making way for Courts and McSheen.
Carnoustie again found themselves under pressure when a rare bad clearance by Narey fell to Feeney and from his lay-off Carrigan tried a shot, but McCafferty had no trouble making the save.
In 70 minutes, the Gowfers had another let-off after Bollan fouled Feeney 30 yards out. Carrigan's free kick was partially cleared away and dropped out to Courts, who shot narrowly past McCafferty's right-hand post.

Just two minutes later, Rose passed up a glorious chance to go ahead. A long throw-in by Courts fell to Herd just inside the six yard box, but thankfully for the Gowfers he sliced his shot over the top from three yards out.
At this point, Farrell was replaced by Collier, then in 82 minutes, Ogilvie went on for Morrison in the Gowfers' third and final change.
Just when it seemed Carnoustie had done enough to hold on for their first ever point at Prestonfield, they were dealt a severe blow in 86 minutes. McCafferty got up to make a great save from a Feeney cross, but the 'keeper's attempt to touch the ball over the top unfortunately ran along the crossbar before dropping back into play at the feet of BRADLEY, who shot home from less than two yards.
Two minutes later, the Gowfers almost snatched an equaliser, but Smith's fierce drive from a Collier cross was thwarted by an excellent save from McGlynn at the expense of what proved to be a fruitless corner.
Shortly afterwards, the referee signalled the end of the game and Carnoustie were left pondering what might have been.
