Carnoustie Panmure 3 Dundee North End 1
Two first half goals and a third late in the game gave Carnoustie Panmure a comfortable 3-1 victory over Dundee North End in the quarter-finals of the GA Engineering Cup at Laing Park on Saturday afternoon.Carnoustie had the strong westerly wind at their backs in the first half and attacked from the kick-off.
Early pressure by the Gowfers almost produced the opening goal when a Muhsin cross was dropped by the North End 'keeper, but the ball ran behind for what proved a fruitless corner.
Moments later, a Cook cross from the right was controlled by D. Smith, whose fine 30 yard drive narrowly missed Stewart's left-hand post.
Abbot was next to come close with a 25 yard free kick, whichStewart did well to block at his left-hand post and the loose ball was quickly cleared away upfield by the Dokens' defence.
Carnoustie continued to press and took a deserved lead in 15 minutes direct from a corner on the left. MUHSIN took the kick and curled the ball over the 'keeper's head into the net to put the Gowfers ahead.
In 17 minutes, Michael Stewart was booked for a foul on Voigt. From the resultant free kick, Carnoustie won another corner on the left, but this time Muhsin's cross was headed past by Voigt.
North End were seldom seen as an attacking force, but came close to equalising when an Ogilvie passback was held up in the wind. Whyte, however, came smartly off his line and was able to thump the ball clear, with Clark charging in.
Collier was then fouled by Brown on the halfway line, but Robertson's high looping free kick was well held by 'keeper Stewart, under pressure from Collier.
Again the Gowfers came close to doubling their lead when a fine through ball from Beith released Voigt, who chipped the advancing 'keeper, but found only the side-netting.
Beith then worked a neat one-two with D. Smith, but his final shot flashed just wide of Stewart's right-hand post.
The pressure eventually paid off in 36 minutes when a cross by D. Smith from the left was fumbled by Stewart and fell to ROBERTSON, who prodded the ball home from close-in.
North End tried to get themselves back in the game, but a Henderson effort from the edge of the box was straight at Whyte and failed to cause the 'keeper any problems.
Back at the other end, Muhsin forced another corner on the left and taking the kick himself picked out Voigt, who headed past from eight yards.
In 44 minutes, Collier was booked for persistent fouling.
Right on the half-time whistle, a Voigt long-range effort was well held by Stewart in the North End goal.
Half Time : Carnoustie Panmure 2 Dundee North End 0
With the wind now in their favour, North End were first to show after the break and forced two corners in quick succession before the ball was cleared away by the home defence.Although Carnoustie were now limited to the occasional breakaway, chances did come their way, but Beith and D. Smith both squandered good opportunities.
In 57 minutes, the Dokens made a double substitution, replacing O'Connor and Henderson with Devine and Milton.
Having weathered the early storm, Carnoustie began to come more into the game again and were almost through for a third when a Cook free kick was headed on by Voigt, but 'keeper Stewart only just beat Collier to the loose ball.
Moments later, Robertson just failed to get on the end of a Beith corner, the ball bouncing off him and going behind for a goal kick.
Abbot then got up the left and fired in a good cross from which Muhsin headed narrowly past.
In 75 minutes, Voigt was booked for time-wasting.
A minute later, the Gowfers killed the match as a contest by going three up. Abbot broke clear on the right and with a great pass picked out VOIGT, who rounded the 'keeper before stroking the ball into the empty net.
The referee produced his yellow card again in 80 minutes, this time to caution D. Smith for a tripping offence.
Ramsay had a chance to pull a goal back for North End when he worked his way into the home box after receiving a pass from Pepper, but Whyte brought off a fine diving save to his right.
The Dokens made their third and final change in 81 minutes, R. Smith going off to be replaced by Innes.
With just four minutes of regulation time remaining, North End grabbed a late consolation goal. Ogilvie gave away a corner on the right and from Clark's cross, the unmarked GARRICK headed home from six yards.
Morrison was booked in 87 minutes for dissent. He then applauded the referee and received a second yellow card, followed by the red, and the Gowfers were down to 10 men.
Despite being a man short in the closing stages, Carnoustie were never in any danger of losing the tie, but in 89 minutes took time out to replace Collier with Conway just as a precaution.
In stoppage time, Pepper, Devine and Clark all attempted long-range efforts for the visitors, but none caused Whyte any problems. Ramsay then had a shot blocked for a corner, but Clark's cross was too strong and curled wide of the far post for a goal kick.
That proved to be the last action of the match and the final whistle saw Carnoustie join Broughty Athletic, Forfar West End and Aberdeenshire outfit Culter in the hat for this Monday's semi-final draw.
