Carnousite Panmure Versus Arbroath XI

Gowfers Teach Young Lichties A Lesson

Carnoustie Panmure 5 Arbroath Under 19-s 0

It was a case of former Lichties showing potential future stars the way on Sunday afternoon when Carnoustie Panmure won by a comfortable margin.

All five of The Gowfers' goals came from players released by Arbroath over recent seasons - Kevin Steele, Steven Cook and a hat-trick from Jim Collier.

It was the visitors who had the first chance of the tie when Steven McPhee sneaked through on goal but John McCafferty saved well.

With seven minutes on the clock STEELE broke the deadlock when he calmly slipped the ball home. The visitors were guilty of pushing too far forward in attack with the Gowfers capitalising on a quick breakaway that left Arbroath's Robbie Jack the only defender as three attackers bore down on goal.

Another former Lichtie should have doubled his side's lead but Jon Voigt headed Gavin Beith's cross over the bar.

After 23 minutes David Easton looked set to score for the Maroons but a superb last ditch challenge from Jim Scott saw the danger cleared.

And six minutes later Gordon MacDonald found himself in a similar position thanks to a Jack long ball, however, he was unable to get his shot away before Beith cleared.

Half Time : Carnoustie Panmure 1 Arbroath 0

The home side made four changes at the interval and went on to score three in a space of just five minutes.

The first, after 48 minutes fell to substitute COLLIER who headed home from inside the box following Daryn Smith's cross.

Two minutes later COLLIER grabbed his second when Sean Mushin's long ball fooled the young Arbroath defence with the forward quick to fire through the legs of the hesitant 'keeper.

COOK completed the quick-fire run of goals by nodding home at the front post following a corner delivered by Mushin.

Easton tried to pull Arbroath back in to the game when played through on goal, but McCafferty did well to tip his drive around the post just after the hour mark.

Ten minutes later Cook shot in the box but his effort was gathered by an instinctive save by Smith.

With six minutes remaining, COLLIER completed his hat-trick, and an impressive second half display, by sending his header past the Arbroath 'keeper from a Smith cross.
