Clydebank Versus Carnousite Panmure

Scottish Cup 5th Round

Clydebank 3 Carnoustie Panmure 3

Carnoustie were beginning to get the upper hand and were unlucky not to go ahead in 13 minutes when a Muhsin cross picked out Voigt. Gonet just managed to block the header away, then was on hand again to thwart Reilly when the Gowfers' forward just failed to get enough weight behind his effort.

Carnoustie looked well on top, but were stunned when Clydebank opened the scoring in 35 minutes. Collier's attempt to clear from inside the Gowfers' box was charged down by HOBBS, who then spotted McCafferty off his line and lobbed the ball over the 'keeper's head into the empty net.

In 40 minutes, Soutar became the first player to be shown the yellow card after bringing down Reilly out on the right. From the resultant free kick, Conway tried to find Voigt, but Rushford just got there first and headed the ball behind for a corner.

Muhsin got his head to Conway's flag kick, but failed to get enough weight behind it and Gonet had no trouble making the save.

Half Time : Clydebank 1 Carnoustie Panmure 0

From the restart, Carnoustie had a half-chance to get back on level terms. The ball was played back to Cook, who sent Muhsin away down the right. After taking the ball forward, he sent in a good cross to Voigt, who tried a shot, but this was weak and Gonet had no trouble making the save.

In 53 minutes, Carnoustie at last succeeded in levelling the tie. Robertson knocked the ball back in from a Conway corner and it fell to REILLY, who netted with a deft overhead kick.

In 57 minutes, J. Jack nipped past Scott, then fell on the greasy surface and the referee raised more howls of protest from the visiting fans when he awarded the Bankies a free kick despite there being clearly no contact. Anderson sent the ball into the side-netting.

Next minute, Masson became the first Carnoustie player to be cautioned, for tugging J. Jack's shirt.

Controversy flared again in 63 minutes when Hobbs made a run into the Gowfers' box and was brought down by Scott. The referee ran forward to check that it had been inside the line, then pointed to the spot.

Scott, in a moment of madness, grabbed the fallen Hobbs by the shirt and attempted to pull him to his feet, then threw him to the ground again and was immediately shown a straight red card.

Hobbs was then shown a yellow card for comments made to the official.

After order had been restored, LYNN placed the ball on the spot and hammered it low into the net, sending McCafferty the wrong way.

Before play restarted, Carnoustie made their first change with Muhsin making way for Clark, who took over the left-back berth vacated by the dismissed Scott.

Clydebank made their first substitution in 68 minutes with Fisher replacing Hobbs.

The Gowfers then made a second change with Cumming going on to replace Hall in an attempt to add a bit more thrust up front.

In 76 minutes, the referee had his yellow card out again, this time to caution Voigt for bringing down Hailstones. Before the free kick could be taken, Bankies made a second change with Maxwell making way for Jordan.

Carnoustie's pressure was eventually rewarded with an equaliser in 82 minutes. Cook played a great pass through to VOIGT, who controlled the ball well before firing it past Gonet into the net. Unfortunately, Voigt was then shown a second yellow card for over-celebrating and the Gowfers were down to nine men.

D. Smith was introduced to the fray in 86 minutes, replacing Reilly, who had metaphorically run himself into the ground.

Shortly afterwards, Bankies also made their third and final change with McIntyre taking over from J. Jack. Next minute, the referee again had his yellow card out, this time for Clark's foul on Rushford.

In 89 minutes, Carnoustie were awarded a free kick right out on the left touchline, at least 35 yards from goal. CONWAY stepped up and fired a magnificent shot over the defensive wall and past the 'keeper into the net, putting the Gowfers ahead for the first time in the tie.

From the centre, Clydebank surged forward into the visitors' box. McCafferty came off his line to claim the ball, but was smacked in the face by a Bankies' player. The 'keeper complained to the referee about the lack of protection and was promptly shown the yellow card for dissent.

With the watch showing 94 minutes, the ball was played forward into the Gowfers' box and fell to ANDERSON, who took a couple of steps before smashing a shot past the despairing McCafferty to give the home side a scarcely deserved draw and another bite at the cherry.
