Carnousite Panmure Versus Penicuik Athletic

Missed Chances Cos Gowfers Dear As Penicuik Advance In EOS Cup

Carnoustie Panmure 0 Penicuik Athletic 2

Penicuik kicked-off, but with wind advantage in the first half Carnoustie immediately went on the offensive. Smith fed Muhsin on the right, but the latter's cross was blocked for a corner. This opening attack came to nothing, however, as Clark's flag kick came off the top of Thompson's head and out for a throw-in on the far side.

Slack play by the Penicuik defence almost allowed Collier to intercept a passback, but the ball was hurriedly knocked out for a corner on the right. Clark took the kick short to Hall, whose drive from the edge of the box was blocked away.

As the Gowfers continued to press, Clark laid a good ball off to Collier, whose 20 yard shot flashed just wide.

Conway then just failed to get his head to a Cook cross and moments later a Clark 30 yard snap shot fizzed narrowly past 'keeper McKean's right-hand post.

Carnoustie appeared well on top at this stage and Penicuik's solitary attempt at goal during this period was a Cameron long-range effort, which flew high over the bar.

Collier tried to get on the end of a Clark cross from the left, but the ball was too near the 'keeper, who gathered it safely.

Conway then fed Beith on the left, but his cross was missed by Clark at the back post.

With 24 minutes gone, Penicuik mounted a rare attack, which won a corner on the left. In a well-worked set-piece move, Jones picked out CAMERON at the near post and he head-flicked the ball across McCafferty into the far corner of the net to give the visitors a shock lead very much against the run of play.

Encouraged by that goal, Penicuik began to come more into the game and forced another corner, this time on the right. Fortunately for the Gowfers' defence, however, Montgomery's cross was headed past by Steel.

Carnoustie had a scare when a long ball forward into the home box appeared to strike Thompson on the hand, but the visitor's penalty claims went unheeded by the referee.

Cameron had a chance to put Penicuik further ahead after a fine solo run into the box, but squandered the opportunity by ballooning his shot high over the top.

At the other end, Muhsin tried his luck from distance, but his effort was also too high.

Two fruitless corners followed in quick succession, but just as the Gowfers were threatening to get back on level terms, they conceded a spectacular second goal in 44 minutes. Gay was fouled 20 yards out and the resultant free kick was only headed partially clear by Thompson. The ball dropped back out to the kick-taker MILNE, who first-timed a screamer into the roof of the net from 35 yards.

Despite now playing against the wind, Carnoustie were again first to show after the break and had an early chance to pull a goal back from a Muhsin cross, but Conway's header was straight at the 'keeper.

Shortly afterwards, another fine deep cross from Muhsin again found Conway, whose volley was turned away by McKean.

Still the Gowfers were unable to open their account and almost went three down when Montgomery shot narrowly over in 64 minutes.

The visitors continued to press and a McDonald drive was headed off the line by Thompson, with McCafferty beaten. McDonald was first to the loose ball and unleashed another fierce drive, but the 'keeper had regained his position and brought off a great save.

Carnoustie kept plugging away and came close to reducing the deficit in 70 minutes when Collier was put through by Hendry and stuck the ball in the back of the net, but was ruled offside and the 'goal' was disallowed.

The Gowfers again came close when a Clark corner from the right was nodded back across goal by Conway, but Thompson headed over from six yards.

It was just not happening for Carnoustie and right on the final whistle only a great save by McCafferty prevented Gay sealing Penicuik's victory with a powerfully-struck 40 yard free kick.
