Carnousite Panmure Versus Stonehaven

Scottish Junior Cup 2nd Round

Carnoustie Panmure 1 Stonehaven 0

North Region Super League outfit Stonehaven were Carnoustie Panmure's opponents in a Citylink Scottish Junior Cup second round tie at Laing Park on Saturday afternoon. It was all Carnoustie in the early stages and a long-range drive by B. Clark skidded just wide of Smith's left-hand post.

Voigt set up another chance with a cross from the right to the back post, but Muhsin headed straight at the 'keeper when it looked easier to score.

A further spell of home pressure saw Voigt fouled by Barbour just outside the box, but Scott's free kick was blocked for a corner by the defensive wall. Two more flag kicks followed in quick succession before B. Clark's third cross from the right curled over the crossbar and out for a goal kick.

Stonehaven eventually threatened the Carnoustie goal and forced a corner on the left. Glass took the kick, but his cross was cleared by Thompson to the edge of the box from where Reilly launched the ball back upfield.

At the other end, Foy chased a long through ball into the box, but McCafferty came smartly off his line and got to the ball first.

After that slight scare, Carnoustie got themselves quickly back on the attack and were unlucky not to go ahead when Muhsin's back-post header from a D. Smith cross was cleared off the line by R. Clark, with the 'keeper beaten.

The visitors were now coming more into the game and when a Glass corner from the left was headed only partially clear by Thompson, the ball fell to Brian Robb, who blasted a shot high over the bar from the edge of the box.

Moments later, a Robb cross into the home box was headed over his own crossbar by Thompson. Glass took the resultant corner and picked out Strachan, who headed narrowly past.

Half Time : Carnoustie Panmure 0 Stonehaven 0

Carnoustie finally broke the deadlock in 63 minutes after a Cook shot from the left-hand corner of the box was parried away by 'keeper Smith. The ball broke to MUHSIN, who cut in from the right and fired a great left-foot drive high into the net to give the Gowfers the lead.

That advantage was almost short-lived, however, as just a couple of minutes later a Burnett cross found the unmarked Foy, who should have put Stonehaven back on level terms, but screwed his shot wide of the mark from 18 yards.

It was proving quite a ding-dong contest and in 79 minutes the Gowfers had a let-off when, following a goalmouth scramble, the ball broke to Foy, whose fierce 15-yard drive struck the inside of McCafferty's right-hand post and flashed across the face of the goal before being cleared away by substitute Hendry at the far side.

Stonehaven again came close when a snap shot by Robertson from 35 yards flew just over the bar.
