Both sides were slow to settle, but with just eight minutes gone the Gowfers went ahead. Reilly picked up a loose ball in midfield and fed VOIGT, who beat 'keeper Hall with a shot from the right-hand edge of the box.That lead was short-lived, however, as straight from the centre, Cunningham broke clear on the visitors' right and sent over a good cross into the home box. McCafferty was caught in two minds and this allowed McALLISTER to round the stranded 'keeper before firing the equaliser into the empty net from an acute angle.
Thornton pushed forward in search of more and won a corner when Cunningham cut in from the right and saw his shot blocked behind by Campbell. Cunningham took the kick himself and picked out McAinsh, who headed just wide.
After falling out of the game for a time, Carnoustie at last began to push forward once more and won a free kick midway inside the Thornton half. Scott took the kick and found Reilly, who controlled the ball and turned but his shot was straight at the ?keeper.
Shortly afterwards, the Gowfers were again on the attack. Voigt collected a great ball up the left from Scott and played it square to Reilly, who shot narrowly past the far post from 15 yards.
A corner on the right by Clark was only partially cleared by McAllister. Reilly quickly played the ball back into the box, but Thompson shot narrowly by.
In 30 minutes, Thompson was booked for a foul on Wotherspoon. Shields took the resultant free kick, but the ball was cleared away by Scott.
Carnoustie then forced a corner on the right. This was taken short by Muhsin to Clark, who fired in a cross, but Thompson's header was held by the 'keeper.
As the Gowfers continued to press, Morgan was booked for a foul on Reilly in 39 minutes, but Scott's free kick was blocked by the defensive wall.
A minute later, Reilly again took on the Hibs' defence and this time was fouled by Hepburn, who was also booked.
During the stoppage, the visitors? Morgan made a head-butt gesture towards Reilly and was shown a straight red card, having already been booked. The departing player then mouthed-off to the referee, who responded by brandishing a second red card.
Clark was eventually able to take the awarded free kick and found Thompson, whose hook shot from the edge of the box was only just too high.
In 43 minutes, Reilly was booked for obstruction, then just a minute later Wotherspoon was next to be yellow-carded, this for a foul on Scott.
Right on the half-time whistle Thompson miskicked under pressure from Cunningham, but Cook was on hand to make the clearance.

Thornton resumed after the break with Halley on in place of Wotherspoon.The first chance half fell to Carnoustie from a free kick midway inside the visitors' half. Clark floated the ball forward into the box, but Thompson was deemed to have been pushing.
Shortly afterwards, a great cross-field ball from Voigt created another opening for the Gowfers, but S. Hall came smartly off his line to block Clark's shot out for a throw-in.
In 50 minutes, Dickson was booked for a foul on Muhsin.
Two minutes later, Hibs made a second substitution, replacing Cunningham with Connolly.
Carnoustie continued to press and deservedly regained the lead in 55 minutes. A ball in from the left by Scott was controlled well at the edge of the box by E. HALL, who then fired an unstoppable drive high into the roof of the net, giving his namesake in the Hibs' goal no chance.
Thornton attempted another quick-fire response with Drummond getting on the end of a cross from Hepburn, who had broken clear on the left, but his shot produced a fine save from McCafferty at his right-hand post.
In 59 minutes, Carnoustie were also reduced to 10 men after Reilly fouled Hepburn and received a second yellow card, followed by the red.
Three minutes later, the Gowfers made their first change, replacing E. Hall with Masson.
In 67 minutes, Halley was booked for dissent.
A minute later, Muhsin went off and was replaced by Cumming.
The substitute was quickly in the thick of the action, forcing a corner off Bryce, but Clark's cross from the right was too strong and curled behind for a goal kick.
At the other end, the Gowfers had a lucky escape when a McAllister corner from the right picked out Bryce, whose header was deflected wide of the post by his own player Dickson.
Carnoustie came close to doubling their lead when a fine through ball from Voigt was laid-off by Masson to Clark, whose fierce drive flew just inches wide of the left-hand post.
In 76 minutes, Masson was booked for simulation.
A minute later, Thornton made their third and final substitution, replacing team captain McAllister with Wright.
Hibs' last real chance to get back on level terms followed a Hepburn free kick, which was headed away by Thompson. The ball dropped out to Drummond, who snatched at his shot and fired it wildly over the bar.
On the 90 minute mark, Voigt should finally have put the issue beyond doubt after being put clean through by Masson, only to have his shot blocked by the 'keeper's legs.
