Vics set the ball rolling and straight from the kick-off won a free kick when Fotheringham was fouled by Hall. They then gained a corner when the kick was deflected behind by Smith, but when the ball was crossed in, Thompson got up to head clear.In three minutes, Clark tried his luck for Carnoustie from 30 yards, but Reid got down to take the ball at the second attempt.
Two minutes later, Smith sent Muhsin away down the right. Taking the ball forward, he sent in a good cross to Collier, who headed just wide of Reid's left-hand post.
Vics had a chance to open the scoring in nine minutes after Pearson played a good ball through for Warren to chase. Just when it seemed the ball would run out behind, he caught it on the bye-line and sent a shot flashing across the face of the goal, but McCafferty got down to take it before any of the Arbroath players could get a touch. Back came the Gowfers and Muhsin linked with Collier, who sent the ball through to Voigt, but his shot was off target and went out behind.
Pearson made a good run forward for Vics before sending in a deep cross, which Thompson headed behind for a corner. Jones crossed the ball right into the goalmouth, but Hunter got up well to clear it away.
In 19 minutes, Voigt sent a good ball through to Conway, who appeared to be fouled by Fotheringham, but the referee saw nothing wrong and waved play on, amid howls of protest from the Gowfers' support.
Vics came close to opening the scoring in 32 minutes when Warren linked with Pearson, who took the ball to the edge of the box , then fired off a shot, which flashed narrowly over the top.
Five minutes later, Pearson was brought down by Smith on the halfway line. Laing sent the resultant free kick to the back post, but Hunter got up to head clear.
As play surged to the other end, it was Carnoustie's turn to win a free kick when Clark was fouled by Gove. Scott took the kick and tried to find Collier, but Reid came out to take the catch.
In 41 minutes, the Gowfers won another free kick when Voigt was fouled by Norrie. Muhsin took the kick and got the ball up and over the defensive wall, but it also cleared the crossbar.
From Reid's goal kick, Fotheringham took the ball forward, then drilled in a shot, but McCafferty got down to make the save.
With half-time fast approaching, Carnoustie were unlucky not to open their account when a Smith shot went through a ruck of players, but came back off Reid's left-hand post and was played out behind for a corner. Conway took the flag kick, but when the ball came over, Gove got up to head it away to safety.

Shortly after the restart, Carnoustie forced two corners in quick succession and from the second of these, Hall flicked the ball on to Hunter, who headed narrowly over.In 54 minutes, Scott clashed with Johnston and was shown the yellow card for what the referee thought was an unfair tackle.
Carnoustie continued to press and passed up a great chance in 58 minutes. Conway played the ball low across the face of the goal and Collier came steaming in, but shot high over the bar and out of the park from less than six yards.
With an hour on the watch, the Gowfers were made to pay for these missed chances when a long clearance out of the Vics' defence dropped to PEARSON, who strode forward and drilled the ball past McCafferty to put the visitors ahead.
Two minutes later, however, Carnoustie were back on level terms after winning a corner on the left. Conway played the ball right into the goalmouth where HUNTER rose above everyone to power a header into the back of the net.
From the centre, the Gowfers had a slight scare when McCafferty rushed from his line to kick clear, but the ball fell to Fotheringham. He snatched at his shot, however, and the ball went well wide of the 'keeper's right-hand post.
In 71 minutes, Conway took the ball right to the bye-line and sent in a low cross looking for Voigt, but Jones just got there first and booted it away downfield.
With 10 minutes to go, McLauchlin won a corner for the Gowfers off Jones. Taking the kick himself, the substitute swung the ball right into the goalmouth, but it was cleared off the goal line and another chance was gone.
Next minute, McLeish was cautioned for bringing down Conway, who took the resultant free kick himself and curled the ball in, but Reid got up to punch clear.
At the other end, McCafferty kept the sides level with a great save from Pearson, who had taken a pass from Warren.
In 83 minutes, however, McCafferty made a costly mistake when he was beaten in the chase to a long through ball by PEARSON, who then rounded the stranded 'keeper and rolled the ball into the empty net from the tightest of angles.
Carnoustie almost snatched an equaliser in 86 minutes when McLauchlin just failed to connect with a Clark cross.
In stoppage time, the Gowfers had one last chance when Scott played a high ball into the Vics' goalmouth, but Reid got up well to take it cleanly.
Seconds later the referee brought the tie to a close and Vics returned home with all three points, leaving Carnoustie to reflect on those numerous missed chances.
