GOWFERS BEAT VIOLET IN NAIL-BITING FRIENDLY
Dundee Violet 3 Carnoustie Panmure 4
Carnoustie Panmure's scheduled home fixture against Musselburgh Athletic in the East Buktateamwear.com Premier League was called off on Saturday morning after a 9.45 a.m. pitch inspection revealed about a third of the Laing Park playing surface to be frostbound. Not wishing his players to have a fourth consecutive blank weekend, manager Ian Flaherty fixed up an away friendly at Glenesk Park against Dundee Violet, whose programmed fixture at Coupar Angus had also fallen victim to the weather.
Carnoustie attacked from the kick-off with Hendry sending Muhsin away up the right. His cross found McLaughlin, who tried a shot, but 'keeper Kelly had no trouble making the stop.
The Gowfers' early pressure was to no avail, however, as with six minutes gone Violet opened the scoring in virtually their first attack of the match. Lunan was the provider, picking out KIDDIE, who took a couple of steps before hammering a low drive past Gourlay into the corner of the net.
Carnoustie continued to press and deservedly drew level in 14 minutes. Conway sent another good cross right into the goalmouth where it was met by VOIGT, who flicked the ball past Kelly for the equaliser.
In 21 minutes, Carnoustie went ahead after winning a free kick 20 yards out. CONWAY unleashed a fierce shot from the set-piece and although Kelly got a hand to the ball he was unable to prevent it hitting the back of the net.
Not to be denied, however, the homesters drew level in 40 minutes. Milton's cross from wide on the right was met at the back post by McDONALD, who crashed the ball home off the underside of the bar from a tight angle.
Half Time : Dundee Violet 2 Carnoustie Panmure 2
Just two minutes after the restart, Carnoustie were unlucky not to regain the lead when Cook got on the end of a Clark cross and powered in a great header, which had the 'keeper beaten. The ball, however, hit the post, and ran along the line before going out behind.Violet were facing the strong wind and had threatened little since the break, but in 56 minutes, an attempted clearance by Narey struck a home player and broke to SZPAK, who knocked the ball past Gourlay into the left-hand corner of the net, putting the Pansies ahead for the second time in the match.
As the Gowfers pushed hard for an equaliser, Stewart made a fine save from a Narey shot, then seconds later was in action again, this time getting down well to stop a Scott drive.
In 76 minutes, Carnoustie at last got back on level terms when Scott took a short corner to CLARK, who rifled a shot through a ruck of players and found the back of the net beyond the despairing Stewart.
Play swung from end to end as both sides went in search of a winner, but in 84 minutes Cumming used his pace to chase a long ball out of defence. Stewart rushed from his line to kick clear, but blasted the ball against the Carnoustie forward. It spun high in the air over the 'keeper's head and CUMMING followed up to knock the loose ball into the empty net for what proved the decisive counter.
