Broughty Athletic Versus Carnousite Panmure

FORMER GOWFERS SECURE WIN FOR FED IN LOCAL DERBY

Broughty Athletic 3 Carnoustie Panmure 1

In recent years, Carnoustie Panmure have been notoriously slow starters to the season and the new campaign looks like being no exception after a disappointing 3-1 away defeat from Broughty Athletic in their opening D.J. Laing North League Cup fixture at Whitton Park on Saturday afternoon.

Gowfers' manager Ian Gilzean found himself rather short-handed with Gavin Beith working, Daryn Smith stranded in Northern Ireland, and spare goalkeeper Craig Jamieson unavailable.

Only two substitutes were on the bench, Scott Robertson, still not fully recovered from his ankle injury picked up in the Currie Cup final back on June 8, and local lad Ross Murray.

New signings John Farquharson and Gavin Burns were included in the Broughty starting line-up, with three trialists finding a place on the home bench.

Broughty also had ex-Gowfers Iain Macleod, James Russell, Brian Craik and Graham Allan in their squad, while the visitors' line-up included John McCafferty and Terry Masson, who both had Fed connections.

Carnoustie kicked-off, playing up the slope, and Reilly knocked the ball up the right for Clark, but Brown got across to clear.

Ther was an early stoppage in play when Myles and Urquhart both went down after a clash of heads. Although Myles was quickly back on his feet, Urquhart remained on the ground, but was able to continue after a spot of treatment. In three minutes, Broughty had the first real chance of the match, but Craik headed just wide from Farquharson's cross.

Next minute, the homesters were again on the attack and a Craik shot was blocked away by Clark. Craik was first to the loose ball and quickly played it back in, but this time his shot curled well wide of McCafferty's right-hand post.

Urquhart was again in the wars after another clash with Myles, but as before he resumed after treatment from the 'magic sponge'.

In nine minutes, Broughty had another half-chance after Perera played the ball deep into the Carnoustie box. Hendry attempted to clear, but it fell to Farquharson, who drilled in a shot, but put the ball straight to McCafferty, who had no trouble making the save.

Shortly afterwards, the Gowfers' support thought their side had taken the lead when a Cumming shot beat the 'keeper, but cannoned off the underside of the crossbar. The ball rebounded out to Clark, who fired it back in, but Cormack brought off a great save, turning the shot round his right-hand post for a corner. Masson's cross, however, was a poor one and Brown had no trouble getting the ball away to safety.

Just a minute later, Carnoustie again came close to opening the scoring when Cook linked with Cumming, who fired in a shot, but the ball whizzed narrowly over the bar and the chance was lost.

From Cormack's goal kick, the ball reached Macleod, who tried a long-range shot, but McCafferty had no trouble making the stop.

In 21 minutes, it was the Fed's turn to have a chance to go in front when Burns sent in a cross to the unmarked Perera, right in front of goal, but from 10 yards he scooped the ball over the top when it looked easier to score.

Two minutes later, Carnoustie were again unlucky not to open the scoring. Reilly and Cumming combined well to create an opening for Clark, who side-stepped his marker before crashing a shot off the junction of the post and crossbar with the 'keeper beaten.

Carnoustie continued to press and in 26 minutes the Fed had another let-off after Reilly took a pass from Hall and laid the ball back to Urquhart. He took a couple of steps before drilling in a shot, which took a deflection off a defender and rocketted off the crossbar, with the loose ball being cleared by Bertie.

Reilly then played a neat one-two with Urquhart and fired off a shot, which Bertie blocked behind for a corner. Masson's kick was again a poor one and Brown was able to clear it away.

In 31 minutes, Carnoustie had a scare when Russell played a good ball forward for Perera to chase. The Broughty man got to the ball first ahead of the outrushing McCafferty, but lobbed it over the open goal and the Gowfers' support could breathe again.

Back at the other end, a Clark cross from wide on the right was just a shade too high for Reilly, but fell to Urquhart, who shot narrowly over the top.

In 36 minutes, Clark was fouled by Smith 25 yards out. Masson's free kick found Reilly just inside the box with his back to goal. He turned and fired a low shot inches wide of the left-hand post, with Cormack nowhere.

Just a minute later, Carnoustie were made to pay for these missed chances after the homesters won a free kick wide on the right almost on the halfway line. Bertie's long ball right into the goalmouth was dropped by McCafferty at the feet of CRAIK, who made no mistake from three yards.

Broughty now had their tails up and doubled their lead in 43 minutes when a poor clearance by Narey went straight to Burns. Narey lacked the pace to get back in time to remedy his error and the Fed player took the ball down the left before crossing to CRAIK, who drilled it home from 10 yards. McCafferty did get a hand to the shot, but was unable to prevent it hitting the back of the net.

Half Time : Broughty Athletic 2 Carnoustie Panmure 0

On the restart, Broughty were first to have an attempt at goal when a Smith cross picked out Russell, who drove his shot well wide of McCafferty's left-hand upright.

Carnoustie were trying hard to get themselves back in the game and in 58 minutes Clark made a good run down the left before cutting the ball back to Masson at the edge of the box, but his shot lacked any real power and Cormack had no trouble making the save.

Right on the hour mark, Smith brought down Clark on the halfway line and became the first player to be shown the yellow card. From the resultant free kick, Hendry attempted to find Urquhart, but the ball struck Myles and went out of play for a throw.

As the Gowfers continued to press, Reilly took a pass from Hall and flicked the ball forward to Cumming, who rather snatched at his shot and drove it high over the top.

In 69 minutes, Carnoustie at last opened their account. Urquhart cut inside his marker and slid the ball through to REILLY, who drilled it past Cormack from 10 yards.

The goal seemed to spur the Gowfers on to greater efforts, but tight defending by Broughty denied the visitors any clear-cut chances.

The nearest they came to an equaliser was in 79 minutes when a Masson cross picked out Thompson, who headed narrowly over the top.

As play surged to the other end, McCafferty made a good save from Perera, turning the ball round his left-hand post for a corner. Farquharson took the kick, but only rolled the ball a few feet before running forward into the box.

With the Gowfers wondering what was going on, Smith nipped over and played the ball into the goalmouth to RUSSELL, who sent it over McCafferty's head into the net, putting the Fed 3-1 up.

Two minutes later, a Smith cross into the Carnoustie box was knocked down by Craik to Perera, who fired the ball into the net, but he was flagged offside and the 'goal' was chalked off.

In 84 minutes, Russell was shown the yellow card for comments made to the referee.

Next minute, Broughty again came close to adding to their tally when Farquharson picked out Craik with a good cross, but McCafferty made a fine stop. Craik was first to the loose ball and fired it back in, but this time Masson was on hand to block it away.

The only substitution of the match was made by the Fed in 88 minutes with Craik going off to make way for Murdoch.

Three minutes into stoppage time, Perera became the third Broughty player to be cautioned when he voiced his opinion to the referee after a free kick had been given against him.

A minute later, the official blew for full-time and as the Fed celebrated a fine 3-1 victory, the Gowfers were left pondering what might have been.
