Wanderers Stroll On As Gowfers Tumble Out Of 'Scottish'
Carnoustie Panmure 1 Forth Wanderers 3
Carnoustie attacked from the kick-off and had an early chance when Reilly fed a great ball through to Cumming, whose 15 yard drive was blocked by 'keeper McCurley for a corner on the right. Darren Smith got on the end of Reilly's cross and fired in a shot, but the ball was blocked and cleared upfield. As the home side continued to press, Reilly tried a 35 yard drive, which was only just too high.
Forth then began to come more into the game, but failed to trouble Jamieson in the home goal.
Scoring opportunities at the other end were also few and far between, but in 20 minutes Carnoustie were unlucky not to go ahead. Despite being caught by a latish tackle, Reilly fed a pass through to Hall, who rounded the 'keeper before firing the ball into the empty net. However, the referee disallowed the 'goal', opting instead to pull play back for the foul on Reilly, but Hall's 35 yard free kick screamed wide of McCurley's left-hand post.
Boosted by that let-off, Forth pushed forward once more and came close to opening the scoring themselves when a long-range drive by Gemmell had Jamieson scrambling across his goal as the ball flashed narrowly past his right-hand post.
Shortly afterwards, Wanderers again came close when a Crawford long throw right into the Gowfers' box found Napier, who shot just wide.
Back came Carnoustie and McCurley did well to punch clear from a Cumming 30 yard drive.
In 40 minutes, Canning went down injured after blocking an attempted clearance by Beith, but was able to continue after treatment.
Forth continued to press and were awarded a free kick 35 yards out, but Docherty's strong fierce shot cleared the crossbar, much to the relief of the Gowfers' defence.
Just on half-time, Carnoustie claimed a penalty when McIlravey appeared to be brought down inside the box, but the appeals went unheeded by the referee, who waved play on.
Half Time : Carnoustie Panmure 0 Forth Wanderers 0
Carnoustie re-appeared for the second half with Clark on in place of Cook.Again it was the Gowfers who were first to show when a fine effort by Beith was well held by McCurley.
Play then switched to the other end and in 49 minutes a through ball from Docherty released Canning, who was allowed to run on from a blatantly offside position. Jamieson managed to block his initial attempt, but CANNING was first to the rebound and this time fired the ball into the empty net, giving Forth a rather controversial lead.
From the centre, Carnoustie forced a corner on the right, but from McIlravey's cross, Hall shot wildly past the post.
Narey then fired a long cross into the box, but the ball was too near the 'keeper, who held it well. In 62 minutes, Narey was replaced by Urquhart.
A minute later, Grant was booked for dissent.
Forth threatened to double their lead when Napier fed a through ball to G. Murphy, but McIlravey got back to prevent an almost certain goal with a great saving tackle.
However, a second counter for the visitors was only briefly delayed, as in 67 minutes a great cross from the left by Canning narrowly eluded Beith's head and DOCHERTY, coming in behind, chested the ball down before blasting it past Jamieson from eight yards.
The visitors made their first substitution in 75 minutes, replacing Crawford with A. Murphy.
A minute later, G. Murphy became the second Forth player to be booked for dissent.
Wanderers were now dictating the play and A. Murphy tested Jamieson with a fierce 35 yard drive, which the 'keeper did well to hold.
In 80 minutes, Canning went off and was replaced by Cameron.
Carnoustie attempted a late rally and almost pulled a goal back with an inswinging McIlravey corner, which McCurley only just prevented sneaking in under the crossbar.
However, any hopes of a home fightback were quickly dashed in 83 minutes when substitute CAMERON ran on to a through pass from A. Murphy and took a couple of strides before firing the ball past Jamieson for Wanderers' third.
Straight from the centre, Carnoustie pushed forward and in 84 minutes CUMMING drove home from 10 yards, but it was all too little too late. Forth then proceeded to put up the shutters and Napier and A. Murphy were both yellow-carded for time-wasting in the closing minutes.
The Gowfers could find no further way through and what had been a poor performance by Ian Gilzean's men deservedly ended in a 3-1 defeat and their early exit from this season's 'Scottish'.
