Penicuik Athletic Versus Carnousite Panmure

GOWFERS TAKE HEART AND A POINT FROM A GOOD DISPLAY

Penicuik Athletic 1 Carnoustie Panmure 1

The Gowfers kicked off playing up the slight slope and with a cold westerly breeze blowing across the park. Reilly played the ball long up the right for McIlravey to chase, but although the youngster did well to catch it, Milne got back to block his attempted cross out of play.

In three minutes, Hall sent McIlravey away on another good run up the right. He took the ball almost to the bye-line before whipping in a low cross meant for Reilly, but 'keeper Bald got down to clutch it.

Carnoustie continued to press and in eight minutes Cook was making his way into the box when he was tripped by Milne, but instead of pointing to the spot, as was expected, the referee flashed the yellow card at the Gowfers' player for simulation.

From the resultant free kick, play surged to the other end, but came to a halt when Masson fouled Barr. Gay took the free kick, but fired the ball well wide of Jamieson's left-hand post.

In 17 minutes, another promising Carnoustie attack saw Reilly get the better of Meikle, then send in a cross towards Cumming, but Bald rushed out to intercept and make the save.

Another chance came the Gowfers' way in 24 minutes when Cook was fouled by Lynch. Masson took the free kick, but blasted the ball straight into the defensive wall. As the ball spun away, the referee spotted another infringement and awarded Panmure a second free kick almost on the same spot. This time, Clark took the kick and not only sent the ball over the bar, but right over the boundary wall and out of the park as well.

Good play by Cumming, Cook and McIlravey ended with McIlravey being brought down by Barr 25 yards out. Reilly took the free kick, but put the ball just wide of Bald's left-hand upright.

Carnoustie had been doing most of the pressing, but against the run of play it was Penicuik who scored a rather controversial opener in 38 minutes. Kelly blatantly pushed Smith to the ground, then played the ball through to GAY, who smashed it past Jamieson into the net.

In 41 minutes, the Gowfers came close to levelling the score when Cook fed McIlravey, then continued his run to take the return pass before lobbing the ball over the 'keeper's head, but unfortunately it also cleared the crossbar and the chance was lost.

Right on the half-time whistle, Penicuik almost doubled their lead after winning a corner off Cook, but Gay headed well wide from Steel's flag kick.

Half Time : Penicuik Athletic 1 Carnoustie Panmure 0

Penicuik resumed with Coleman on in place of Steel.

Within a minute of the restart, Moonie picked up a loose ball in midfield and played it through to Gay, who tried a shot, but Jamieson had no trouble stopping it.

In 48 minutes, Reilly was the second Gowfers' player to be shown yellow, although what it was for remains a mystery.

McIlravey was fouled by Barr in 51 minutes and from the resultant free kick the Gowfers came close to equalising.

Two minutes later, Carnoustie's efforts were rewarded from a speculative ball played into the home box. A goalmouth scramble ensued before the ball came off Clark and broke to COOK, who hammered it past Bald into the net.

In 61 minutes, the Gowfers made their first change with Urquhart on for Clark.

In 66 minutes, Urquhart was chopped down by Moonie, who was promptly shown the yellow card.

Penicuik had dropped out of the game for a time, but in 74 minutes were awarded a free kick on the edge of the visitors' box after Robertson was adjudged to have fouled Gay.

Kelly took the kick, but Robertson got up well to head behind for a corner. Coleman's cross picked out Gay, who got in a header, but put the ball high and over.

Two minutes later, Urquhart was booked for a foul on Gallagher. Coleman sent the resultant free kick deep into the Gowfers' box, but Smith headed clear.

Both sides made changes in 80 minutes, McSkimming replacing McIlravey for Carnoustie, and Walker taking over from Moonie for Penicuik.

In 82 minutes, Gay was booked for bringing down Urquhart, and before the free kick could be taken, the home side made their final change with Gray replacing Kelly.
