Gowfers Keep Up Pressure On League Leaders
Carnoustie Panmure 3 Penicuik Athletic 0
Penicuik kicked-off, but it was Carnoustie, playing towards the town end, who were first to show. A long through ball from Beith was chased in by Clark, but 'keeper Ramage came smartly off his line to clear from the edge of the box.In the Gowfers' next attack, Reilly fed a great ball down the right to McIlravey, whose cross was just too high for the inrushing Urquhart. The home side were doing all the early pressing and again came close when a fine 40 yard drive by Clark flashed narrowly over the bar with Ramage struggling.
Carnoustie's efforts were rewarded in 10 minutes when Cumming, on the right, crossed low and hard into the box and REILLY shot high into the net from six yards.
A few minutes later, Penicuik mounted their first real attack of the match, which ended with Korinek heading narrowly past from a Montgomery cross.
Back at the other end, the Gowfers almost made it two when a Clark cross from the right picked out Urquhart, whose header was only just too high.
Reilly was then fouled by Steel on halfway. Cumming got his head to Beith's free kick, but his effort was weak and held easily by the 'keeper.
Shortly afterwards, Penicuik had an even bigger let-off when Clark put in a great cross from the right, but Cumming's header struck Ramage's left-hand post and rebounded clear.
Carnoustie continued to press and a Reilly lay-off set up another chance, but Clark's 25 yard shot was too direct and straight at Ramage, who saved easily.
In a rare Penicuik counter-attack, Beith fouled Korinek out on the right, but Montgomery's free kick was headed clear by Hendry.
The visitors then won a corner on the left, but Korinek's cross was cleared easily by the Gowfers' defence.
A poor pass by Meikle almost let Cumming in for Carnoustie, but the Penicuik man recovered in time to knock the ball out for a throw-in.
The Lothian side were now coming more into the game and Coleman tested Jamieson with an angular drive from the left, which the 'keeper did well to palm behind for a corner. However, Montgomery's flag kick again presented few problems for the home defence and was cleared away by Hendry.
Shortly afterwards, Carnoustie had a slight scare when a Montgomery high cross from the left bounced on the top of the crossbar and went over, although Jamieson did appear to have it covered.
In 34 minutes, Clark was adjudged to have fouled Kelly and after protesting at the decision, was booked for dissent. The resultant free kick35 yards out was taken by Coleman, who sent the ball high and wide of the target.
Carnoustie pushed forward once more and doubled their lead in 36 minutes. Reilly won the ball in midfield and fed CUMMING, who outpaced Meikle and rounded the advancing Ramage before firing into the empty net.
Moments later, it was almost three courtesy of a great through ball from Reilly, but Beith's shot was straight at the 'keeper and the chance was lost.
The Gowfers were again doing all the pressing and should have had a penalty when a McIlravey cross into the box appeared to be blocked by Meikle with an arm, but the home spot kick claims went unheeded by the match official.
In 41 minutes, Meikle was booked for comments to one of the referee's assistants.
The last chance of the first half fell to Penicuik after a Korinek shot was deflected for a corner, but Montgomery's cross from the left was headed clear by Beith at the near post.
Half Time : Carnoustie Panmure 2 Penicuik Athletic 0
Any hopes the visitors may have harboured of a second half fightback were quickly dashed when Carnoustie went three up within two minutes of the restart. Beith's deep cross from the left was laid back by McIlravey to NAREY, who from 25 yards fired the ball across the 'keeper into the far corner of the net.Nevertheless, Penicuik kept plugging away and a close-in shot from Lynch was blocked by Cumming, back helping his defence.
In 54 minutes, Cumming sustained a leg knock, but continued after treatment.
Three minutes later, Urquhart saw yellow for a foul on Lynch. From the resultant free kick, Coleman sent a 30 yard drive well wide of the target.
Carnoustie made a change in 59 minutes, replacing the injured Cumming with Masson.
The visitors followed this with a double substitution in 64 minutes, sending on Gay and Noon for Barr and Lynch, then just a minute later Cook replaced Urquhart for the Gowfers.
Penicuik came close to pulling a goal back when Noon got his head to a Korinek cross, but Jamieson, at full stretch, got up to touch the ball over for a corner. Montgomery's cross from the right picked out Meikle, who headed just wide.
The visitors continued to press and a snap shot by Cole from 25 yards was only just too high.
In 72 minutes, Penicuik made a third and final change, replacing Montgomery with Trialist.
Shortly afterwards, Panmure introduced Smith for Clark.
Penicuik continued to search for a late consolation counter, but the nearest they came to opening their account was a fierce Noon drive, which was well saved by Jamieson.
Right on the final whistle, the visitors had another chance from a Cole cross, but Gay shot high over the top from 25 yards.
As the teams were leaving the pitch at the end of the match, Penicuik's Noon had words with one of the referee's assistants and was later summoned to the referee's room where he received a red card for foul and abusive language.
On reflection, Carnoustie were well worth their 3-0 victory and have now climbed to fourth in the table, just two points behind league leaders Forfar West End.
