Carnousite Panmure Versus St Andrews Utd

Gowfers Stymie St Andrews In First Ever League Encounter

Carnoustie Panmure 3 St Andrews Utd 0

St Andrews attacked from the kick-off and forced a corner on the right. Patrick's cross, however, was too strong for his fellow forwards and the ball went out on the far side.

Cumming was first to show for Carnoustie, finding space on the right-hand side of the box, but shot wide of the far post.

Back at the other end, Evans was put through by Sutherland, but Jamieson blocked the shot away with a fine stop.

Carnoustie pushed forward once more and came close to opening the scoring when Clark made a good run into the St Andrews' half and fed McIlravey, who was unlucky to find only the side-netting with a powerful strike.

Shortly afterwards, Cumming got down the right and put in a good cross, but Reilly's header went behind off Brown for a fruitless corner.

In 15 minutes, Narey fed a good pass down the right to McIlravey, whose low ball across the six yard box was stroked home by REILLY to put the Gowfers ahead.

Moments later it was almost two when a McIlravey corner from the left was cleared only as far as Clark, who shot narrowly past.

Carnoustie continued to press and 'keeper Amos came to United's rescue with a fine double save from shots by McIlravey and Reilly.

A rare St Andrews' attack forced a corner on the right, but Patrick's cross was cleared away by Hendry.

Urquhart was first to the loose ball and made a good run forward before passing to Cumming, whose fierce drive was well held by Amos.

The visitors were now beginning to come more into the game and from another Patrick corner, this time on the left, Clark did well to clear at the near post. The ball dropped out to McGuigan, who tried a shot from the edge of the box, but ballooned his effort high over the bar.

Bad ball control by Hall in midfield saw him lose possession to Sutherland, who ran in on goal, but his shot from 10 yards shaved the outside of Jamieson's left-hand post.

Having survived that scare, Carnoustie pushed forward again and almost doubled their lead when a long through pass from Hall released McIlravey, who lobbed the outrushing 'keeper only to see the ball cleared off the line by Dorward.

In 35 minutes, Dorward was booked for a foul on Cumming.

St Andrews returned to the attack and put the home goal under pressure when Evans fired in a cross to Sutherland, whose shot was blocked for a corner by Hendry. Patrick again took the flag kick and this time found Muhsin, whose fierce drive from the edge of the box was well held by Jamieson.

Shortly afterwards, the Gowfers had another let-off when McGuigan put in a cross from the left to the far post and Patrick shot wide from close-in.

As the visitors continued to press, a Finlay long throw found Muhsin in the clear, but Jamieson was again equal to the task.

Right on the half-time whistle, United again came close to drawing level when Evans made a strong run into the home box, but his shot flashed narrowly past Jamieson's right-hand post.

Half Time : Carnoustie Panmure 1 St Andrews Utd 0

As in the first half, St Andrews forced an early corner, but Patrick's cross was scrambled clear by Robertson.

In 47 minutes, Reilly and Ramsay were both booked following a midfield tussle.

Carnoustie should have gone two up after a fine solo run by Clark on the right. His cross into the six yard box was side-footed goalwards by Cumming, but Amos managed to block the ball on the line and the chance was lost.

Cumming was then put through by Reilly, but with only the 'keeper to beat his shot was blocked. The ball rebounded out to McIlravey, who shot past from the edge of the box.

With the Gowfers now in the ascendancy, United made a substitution in 56 minutes, replacing Dorward with Brash.

Carnoustie continued to press and deservedly went further ahead in 58 minutes. Brown missed a clearance at the edge of the box and first to pounce was MCILRAVEY, who fired past Amos from 15 yards.

At this stage, it was all one-way traffic and from a Clark corner on the right, Reilly tried a shot, which was palmed away by Amos. Clark was first to the loose ball, but sent his shot high over the top.

In 64 minutes, Finlay was booked for a foul on Urquhart.

Three minutes later, St Andrews made a second change, replacing Muhsin with Maxwell.

Shortly afterwards, Clark fed Cumming, who rounded the 'keeper and drove into the empty net, only to be flagged offside and the 'goal' was disallowed.

Still the Gowfers pushed forward and were again unlucky not to increase their lead when Cumming set up a chance for McIlravey, whose shot was tipped over the bar by Amos. Clark took the resultant flag kick, but his cross was cleared up the park by Brown.

Carnoustie's pressure eventually produced a third counter in 75 minutes, courtesy of some slack play by the St Andrews' defence. Fallon was woefully short with a passback, allowing REILLY to nip in and fire the ball past Amos into the empty net.

After that, there was only ever going to be one winner, but Carnoustie survived a scare when Hall was dispossessed in midfield by Maxwell, who was clean through on goal, but squandered the opportunity by shooting wide from 30 yards.

Back at the other end, McIlravey got through again for the Gowfers and chipped the advancing 'keeper, but the ball carried just too far and fell the wrong side of the crossbar.

Evans should have pulled one back for United after breaking through the middle on his own, but hesitated too long and Beith got back to block the shot.

St Andrews made their third and final substitution in 87 minutes, sending on Fraser for Brown, but it was to no avail and at the final whistle the Gowfers celebrated a fine 3-0 victory, which sees them climb to fifth in the league table.
