Carnousite Panmure Versus Whitburn

GOWFERS' EAST OF SCOTLAND CUP HOPES GO WEST

Carnoustie Panmure 1 Whitburn 3

Within seconds of the start, Reilly required treatment after going down injured with a leg knock with play still inside the centre-circle. The player quickly recovered, however, and shortly afterwards, a Reilly through ball was chased by Beith, but 'keeper Walker won the race in time to clear.

It was all Carnoustie in the opening stages and another chance came their way when Reilly slipped a pass through to Cumming, but again Walker came smartly off his line to save at the feet of the advancing player.

Whitburn eventually got up the park and Doig put in a good cross from the left, but Jamieson was equal to the task and held the ball easily.

In 14 minutes, the Whitburn pressure paid off when a Mooney free kick from the left was only partially cleared by the home defence and broke to LEIPER, who hammered the ball past Jamieson from eight yards to put the Lothian men ahead.

Worse was to follow just a minute later when a long through ball from D. McGurk caught the Gowfers day-dreaming and DOIG out-paced Narey before giving Jamieson no chance from 10 yards for the visitors' second.

Carnoustie were then forced to make an early substitution when Urquhart, who had picked up a knock, had to go off and was replaced by McIlravey in 16 minutes.

The Gowfers came close to pulling a goal back when a Beith 25-yard free kick appeared netbound, but took a deflection off Cumming and went behind for a goal kick.

Whitburn pushed forward and won a corner on the right, but Leiper headed wide from Dolan's cross.

The referee, however, spotted McNelis pushing in the box and awarded a free kick to Carnoustie.

The Gowfers had another let-off when Doig got past Narey again but his attempt to chip Jamieson from the edge of the box landed on the roof of the net.

Back at the other end, a Reilly drive was blocked out to Robertson, who squandered the opportunity by blasting the ball high over the bar.

Another chance went a-begging when a Masson 40-yard free kick was headed past by Cumming.

Doig almost put Whitburn further ahead with a fierce 15-yard drive, but Jamieson got down well to clutch the ball safely at the base of his right-hand post.

In 42 minutes, Beith fouled D. Murphy out on the right. McGurk's quickly taken free kick was driven low and hard across the box by D. Murphy to the far post where STRICKLAND shot home from six yards to put Whitburn three up and apparently coasting into the second round.

Just on half-time, the Gowfers should have pulled a goal back when McIlravey made a good run down the right and beat two men before cutting the ball back to Hall, who blasted wildly over from the edge of the box when he should have done better.

Half Time : Carnoustie Panmure 0 Whitburn 3

Straight from the restart, Carnoustie went on the attack and had an early chance from a Masson 35-yard free kick, but the ball was blocked away by the defensive wall.

In 48 minutes, Mooney was booked for dissent. The visitors continued to press and again came close when an S. Murphy long throw picked out Strickland, who hooked the ball just wide.

Hopes of a Gowfers' fightback were boosted in 59 minutes when Reilly fed MASSON, who cut inside from the left-hand corner of the box and bulleted a fierce drive past Walker from 10 yards.

However, Whitburn had wind advantage in the second half and lifted their game again in response. With the home goal under pressure, Hall was booked for a foul on Donnelly just outside the box, but S. Murphy fired the free kick over the bar.

Jamieson was once again the busier of the two 'keepers and did well to turn a Mooney 40-yard drive over for a corner. Another corner followed in quick succession and this time Dolan's cross was headed past by Leiper.

Carnoustie made a second change in 75 minutes, replacing Beith with Clark.

A minute later, Whitburn also made a switch, sending on Mackay for S.Murphy.

With 10 minutes to go, Carnoustie's third and final substitution saw the introduction of new signing McSkimming for Hall.

Whitburn again came close when Strickland laid the ball off to Dolan, whose low drive produced a fine save from Jamieson.

In 87 minutes, Doig went off and was replaced by Hastie.

Whitburn ended the match on the attack and almost added a fourth right on the final whistle when Donnelly's 40 yard free kick cleared the defensive wall, but was too direct and straight at Jamieson, who held it easily.

Carnoustie may have won the second half 1-0, but Whitburn's domination of the first half saw the Lothian men progress to the second round.
