BARE BONES GOWFERS START YEAR WITH WIN

Carnoustie were down to the bare bones for the visit of, basement club, Scone Thistle to Laing Park, but Phil McGuire’s had the game won by half time with all the goals in a 4-0 win coming before half time.

Carnoustie were without Steven McPhee who was completing his suspension while Robert Smith and Ryan Dignan were ill. Paddy Conway came in to the side for his first game for over 12 months and the six man bench included Dale Reid and Kieran Conway who were both carrying injuries, two goalkeepers, and both Scott Hamilton and Jack Chalmers from the youth set up.

The Gowfers got off to the perfect start with just 46 seconds on the clock as Finn Kemlo found room on the right before hitting a perfect cross for Sam Simpson to slam the ball home but the home side couldn’t increase the lead until Pat Martin got on the end of a cross from Connor Coupe to double the lead on 22 minutes. The goal of the game came on 37 minutes, central defender Ryan Suttie set off on a rune before releasing the ball wide, kept his marauding run going and got on the end of the cross to make it 3-0 after 37 minutes. The game was over just before the break when Martin scored his second of the game and third of the season to make it 4-0, a minute before the break. In the second half both sides huffed and puffed on a difficult surface without further scoring, Scone keeper, Ewan Wallace, making several good saves to keep Carnoustie at bay.
