BONNYRIGG ROSE 4 CARNOUSTIE 0

“Better than Kelty last season” was just one of the comments to come from Carnoustie after they went down 4-0 to title favourites Bonnyrigg Rose at New Dundas Park and having faced both of the top two in recent weeks their is no doubt who The Gowfers expect to win the title.

Derek Paterson failed to recover from injury meaning Ewan Buggins partnered Adam Harwood who returned from suspension with Steven Cook at left back and Bailey Steel at right back. Jake Mair was on the left of midfield replacing the absent Sam Simpson with Robert Urqhuart on the right and John Roberts and Jamie McCabe in the middle while Pat Martin and Ryan Dignan continued their striking partnership.

Bonnyrigg started on the front foot and it was no surprise when they took the lead on seven minutes courtesy of a looping Dean Hoskins header. Despite continued pressure Jamie Robbie was in fine form and pulled off two excellent saves to keep the score at 1-0. However, the Gowfers keeper was powerless to stop Ross Gray making it 2-0 after 34 minutes after great work by Kieran McGachie. The game was effectively over just after the hour when Mark McConnell headed home after a corner wasn’t cleared and with eight minutes remaining Lewis hit a fourth for Bonnyrigg.

At times the game was like a cat tormenting a mouse as Bonnyrigg’s superiority told and without the performance of Jamie Robbie in goal the margin of victory could have been a lot larger. However, this was just one game and next week sees the first of three big games for Carnoustie against Broughty Athletic, Hill Of Beath and Jeanfield Swifts.

Carnoustie : Robbie, Steel (Walker), Cook, Buggins, Harwood, Roberts, Urquhart, McCabe (Conway), Martin, Dignan, Mair
