GOWFERS GO LEVEL AT TOP AFTER WIN

Carnoustie’s rampant performance in midweek saw them close the gap to Dundee East Craigie down to three points and three goals and following Saturdays win for The Gowfers over Arbroath Vics at Laing Park, the points are level, and the goal difference is also level, with The Shipbuilders still top by virtue of scoring one more goal.

Phil McGuire’s men could and probably should have gone above East Craigie but passed up several chances in the second half to score. All the goals in Carnoustie’s 3-0 victory came before half time with Dale Reid setting them on the path to victory when he bundled the ball home at the second attempt after 12 minutes. On 25 minutes, Jamie Winter doubled the advantage when he scored from the penalty spot after Bruce Hearn had been fouled in the box and Reid made it three just after the half hour mark.

After the break Carnoustie continued to dominate but couldn’t add to their tally due to a combination of poor finishing, good goalkeeping and the woodwork kept them at bay.
