Carnoustie returned to Midlands League action at home to Brechin Vics in the return fixture of the opening day of the season.

Prior to the game, goalkeeper Jamie Robbie who has recently taken the decision to retire due to injury was presented with his Midlands League title winning shirt, signed by the squad. In his seventeen-year career Jamie has played for just two clubs, us and Brechin Vics and Vics Secretary, Brian Eaton and Captain, Murray Smith joined Ryan Roche and Phil McGuire for the presentation.

Gowfers manager Phil McGuire made changes to his starting XI with one eye in next weekend’s Scottish Junior Cup tie at home to Glenafton Athletic and it took his side a while to get going before upping their game after the break to run out 6-2 winners.

Murray Smith struck a sweet volley, after ten minutes, to give Brechin the lead but The Gowfers turned the game round in a four-minute spell midway through the half. On 27 minutes a free kick from Jamie Winter appeared to be flicked home by Dylan Stephen and then two minutes later Dale Reid added another wonderful strike to his collection from the edge of the box.

After the break, Brechin were allowed back into the game and were level on 51 minutes when Smith scored from the spot after Winter had been penalised for a trip. McGuire made changes on 62 minutes with Sam Simpson, Ross Fraser and Bailey Steel replacing Stephen, Pat Martin and Arran Leiper with the fresh legs having an immediate effect on the heavy pitch and Reid added his second from close range on 64 minutes. Gordon Macdonald had been a handful for the Vics defence and when he was dumped to the ground on 72 minutes, Simpson scored from the spot and Macdonald got in on the scoring act himself with two goals on 77 and 82 minutes to complete a comfortable victory.
