Carnoustie crashed out of the East Of Scotland Cup on penalties to Kirriemuir Thistle despite leading 3-1 with 15 minutes to go at Laing Park.
Manager Alan McSkimming made one change to the side that drew 0-0 at Penicuik Athletic with Alan Cormack coming in for Jamie Robbie
The Gowfers started brightly and took a deserved lead after just 8 minutes when Steven Cook turned home a Pat Martin cross at the back post, two minutes later and it was 2-0, a Dignan cross was flicked goalwards by Pat Martin and Kirrie Keeper, Sean Diamond did really well to turn the ball on to the bar but Robert Uruqhart was on hand to nod the ball in to the open net. Kirrie came back in to the game and pulled a goal back on 26 minutes when Stewart Russell was allowed space on the edge of the six yard box to shoot home. Carnoustie restored the two goal cushion three minutes later through a great strike from Ryan Roche from a Jamie McCabe free kick. Carnoustie continued to press but threw away several chances to extend the lead further but went in at half time 3-1 to the good.
The second half was a story of profligacy from Carnoustie as chance after chance were spurned and this came back to haunt them. Firstly on 76 minutes, Adam Harwood was penalised for a rash challenge in the penalty area which could have resulted in a red card instead of the yellow shown, Abie Njie cooly tucking the spot kick away and then with six minutes remaining Russell scored the equaliser when he bundled the ball in at the back post.
So to a penalty shootout, the first nine penalties were all scored but Ewan Buggins saw his kick saved by Diamond to put Kirrie through to a Third Round tie at home to Lochore Welfare.
Carnoustie’s night went from bad to worse when news filtered through that Jeanfield had won 1-0 at Lochee United
