A late winner from Gordon Macdonald meant Carnoustie took all three points from the trip to Luncarty in the Super League North.
Sam Simpson, Pat Martin, Bailey Steel and Jamie Winter all came back in to The Gowfers starting line up after missing last weeks defeat to Lochee United while there were places on the bench for Paul McLellan and Jake Mair. However, manager Phil McGuire had only one central defender available due to holiday and work commitments, meaning Bailey Steel slotted in alongside Harvey Dailly.
Carnoustie started well on a bowling green of a pitch and took the lead on 9 minutes as Ryan Dignan got between two defenders to get on the end of a Steven McPhee free kick and put the ball beyond the home keeper. The Gowfers continued to have the better of the first half but couldn’t find their touch in front of goal with Dignan, Gordon Macdonald and Steven McPhee all missing great chances.
The lead was doubled five minutes after the break as Macdonald received the ball from Winter, turned his defender and fired home to put Carnoustie in control. The home side had other ideas and pulled a goal back on 54 minutes, a free kick from Chris Anton was kept in play on the by line and Fraser Mills lost Dailly before heading past Jamie Robbie. Luncarty were level on the hour mark, substitute Richard Donovan chased what appeared to be a lost cause, robbed Dailly before crossing for Mills to equalise with his second goal. Both sides wanted to win and went on the attack and the game flowed from end to end until The Gowfers got the winner on 88 minutes. A quick throw from substitute McLellan on the left found Macdonald and he played the ball back to McPhee, his shot struck Bradie Heggie on the arm but the referee allowed the advantage as the ball dropped to Macdonald, who lashed the ball in to the back of the net. Luncarty thought they should have had a penalty in added time when Sam Simpson appeared to bring down Mills but the referee waved away their appeals but Luncarty boss Jonny Kelly protested to much and was shown a red card.
The two sides to it all again next week at the same venue but this time in the D J Laing East Region Cup.
